Exclusive Interview with White Bone Rattle

A little while ago I posted about a band called White Bone Rattle for which I had done some work designing the album cover of their debut single. Since then the guys have been really busy, but I managed to steal a few minutes of their time to ask them about their recent signing, their up coming debut E.P and their plans for the future

In as little as two years, you guys have gone from being completely unknown to being exposed at a number of music events, broadcast over the radio airwaves and now you are signed with Tin Robot Records, how do you feel? and what’s your secret?

Blog Action Day 2010: Water

Blog Action Day 2010: Water

Today marks the third annual Blog Action Day, where bloggers from all around the globe “unite in posting about the same issue on the same day, with the goal to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion around an important issue that impacts us all”. The topic of conversation this year for participants is access to clean drinking water. Nearly 1 billion people on the planet do not have access to clean safe drinking water. They are forced to drink dirty and often diseased water, infected with leeches and parasites. The alternative is to die from dehydration. Not much of a choice.

Test Tube Browsers

Test Tube Browsers

Being a graphic designer and a web developer I have always found that one particular operating system seems to cater better or favour one of these roles more. For design I always turn to my Mac, and for development I always turn to…. well my Mac, but the norm would lend itself more towards the Widows spectrum. The problem I find being a developer on a Mac is when it comes to testing. Like it or not (I’m in the latter category), Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still holds the dominant market share when it comes to web browsers, as a result I have to ensure the sites I develop work in IE.

Facebook Developers Garage, London – September

Facebook Developers Garage, London – September

I am currently sat amongst the audience for this month’s Facebook Developers Garage here in London. Slice of pizza in one hand, beer in the other with my macbook pro somewhat precariously placed on my lap. The atmosphere in the room is relaxed, and teaming with ideas and creativity. Everyone is here for one reason, to find out about the latest developments on the Facebook platform so they can build the next best integrations. I was fortunate enough to be invited along to this event as a guest of TechFluff‘s Hermione Way, founder of media agency NewsPepper.

Bye bye education. Hello “real world”.

Bye bye education. Hello “real world”.

I have been very fortunate to find myself in the small percentage of people who leave university with a job lined up after graduation, and this is partly down to having spent an extra year in my degree on an industry placement. I cannot stress more to anyone who is currently in further education or is considering going to university in the future, the importance of real professional experience in the industry you’re studying towards, as it is this alone which sets you aside from the thousands of other applicants who have just graduated. Graduating with a good degree is obviously important as well, but grades alone won’t guarantee you success in the “real world”, especially if you want to work for a major company on a high paying salary to substitute the “free money” from student loans, grants and overdrafts, which you have become so accustomed to.

If you have seen the recent post I made to my portfolio, then you will know that a little while ago I was asked to do a photo shoot with the guys from White Bone Rattle for their debut single.

White Bone Rattle were formed in 2009 by two pairs of brothers, the band has a heavy guitar driven sound combining dark, psychedelic riffs and harmonies and draw influence from the classic rock bands of the 60′s & 70′s. White Bone Rattle’s original and entertaining rock ‘n’ roll sound has earned them much widespread praise from fans and music critics alike.

My biggest downfall is not being able to refuse a challenge when presented with one, so when I stupidly remarked that I could easily do a stand up comedy set at Monkey Shine in front of my friends, they presented me with just that. Me and my big mouth…

The topic of my set is based on friendship, or more to the point: those embarrassing situations you often find yourself in with your friends, or usually as a result of your friends (this being a casing point).

On a personal note I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came out and supported me, and in particular a massive thank you to Christian for filming and producing this video, and also to Annika for being a good sport :-) .

Enjoy, and please feel free to leave me a comment.

Could we ever build a computer that is conscious?

Could we ever build a computer that is conscious?

Abstract

Given the similarities of a computer in terms of its structure and operation to that of a human brain, I argue that it is plausible for us to conceive that given enough advances in technology that we could one day build a computer that is conscious. My main argument of why it is conceivable for us  to assume this, stems from a physicalist approach, based on the belief that consciousness is formed as a result of bio-physical processes. In this essay I look at the ways in which we define the term “conscious”, continually pruning its definition to the form that something can only be considered conscious if it sentient, has a high-level overview of its own cognitive states and most importantly its sensory input is accompanied by qualia. In conclusion I identify that in order for computers to achieve the final necessary condition of qualia; would require the development of the other aspects of intelligence, such as self-awareness and emotions.
