Blog Action Day 2010: Water
Today marks the third annual Blog Action Day, where bloggers from all around the globe “unite in posting about the same issue on the same day, with the goal to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion around an important issue that impacts us all”. The topic of conversation this year for participants is access to clean drinking water. Nearly 1 billion people on the planet do not have access to clean safe drinking water. They are forced to drink dirty and often diseased water, infected with leeches and parasites. The alternative is to die from dehydration. Not much of a choice.
Test Tube Browsers
Being a graphic designer and a web developer I have always found that one particular operating system seems to cater better or favour one of these roles more. For design I always turn to my Mac, and for development I always turn to…. well my Mac, but the norm would lend itself more towards the Widows spectrum. The problem I find being a developer on a Mac is when it comes to testing. Like it or not (I’m in the latter category), Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still holds the dominant market share when it comes to web browsers, as a result I have to ensure the sites I develop work in IE.
A Place For My Head + Blog Action Day 2010
What is Blog Action Day?
If you’re not familiar with Blog Action Day 2010, it’s an annual event where by blogs around the world post and talk about a specific topic as one voice, and try to create change as a result. The issue of access to clean drinking water is the focus of this year’s Blog Action Day 2010.
Bye bye education. Hello “real world”.
I have been very fortunate to find myself in the small percentage of people who leave university with a job lined up after graduation, and this is partly down to having spent an extra year in my degree on an industry placement. I cannot stress more to anyone who is currently in further education or is considering going to university in the future, the importance of real professional experience in the industry you’re studying towards, as it is this alone which sets you aside from the thousands of other applicants who have just graduated. Graduating with a good degree is obviously important as well, but grades alone won’t guarantee you success in the “real world”, especially if you want to work for a major company on a high paying salary to substitute the “free money” from student loans, grants and overdrafts, which you have become so accustomed to.
White Bone Rattle sign with Tin Robot Records
If you have seen the recent post I made to my portfolio, then you will know that a little while ago I was asked to do a photo shoot with the guys from White Bone Rattle for their debut single.
White Bone Rattle were formed in 2009 by two pairs of brothers, the band has a heavy guitar driven sound combining dark, psychedelic riffs and harmonies and draw influence from the classic rock bands of the 60′s & 70′s. White Bone Rattle’s original and entertaining rock ‘n’ roll sound has earned them much widespread praise from fans and music critics alike.
MonkeyShined
My biggest downfall is not being able to refuse a challenge when presented with one, so when I stupidly remarked that I could easily do a stand up comedy set at Monkey Shine in front of my friends, they presented me with just that. Me and my big mouth…
The topic of my set is based on friendship, or more to the point: those embarrassing situations you often find yourself in with your friends, or usually as a result of your friends (this being a casing point).
On a personal note I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came out and supported me, and in particular a massive thank you to Christian for filming and producing this video, and also to Annika for being a good sport
.
Enjoy, and please feel free to leave me a comment.
